About
Gerrit van Rensburg, P.Eng.
A biochemist and licensed Professional Engineer working where biology depends on electrical systems.
Most engineers don’t speak biology. Most biologists don’t speak power. I work in the space between.
I’m a biochemist and a licensed Professional Engineer. My training spans biochemistry and molecular biology, a master’s degree in biochemistry, and an engineering degree in electrical and computer engineering. I hold the P.Eng. designation with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia.
That combination is unusual, and it’s the point. Biological work depends on electrical systems — power, control, sensing, automation — and those systems behave very differently when the load is alive. I work on both sides of that boundary: designing hardware that respects the biology, and doing the biology that makes the hardware worth building.
I write about this boundary at ElectroBio and take on consulting engagements in bioprocess and laboratory systems, molecular biology, and energy systems for controlled-environment agriculture.

Let’s talk about your project.
Tell me what you’re building, the constraints you’re working under, and where biology and electrical systems meet. I’ll reply with a clear view of how I can help.
